Life of a Loftus Pumpkin

From sowing the seed in pots at home to carving out what is supposed to be a scary face It’s been fun all the way.

The children who accepted our invitation and turned up to plant the Pumpkins early in the year have been rewarded with the fruits of their labour – a pumpkin each to make a lantern.

It was great fun teaching our budding little gardeners what to do and watching as they enthusiastically followed our instructions by planting each pumpkin plant with such care. They were well into it, so much so that, they took over ownership of the job deciding that each plant should have a name. As they all had lots of wonderful suggestions it was agreed by all that the fairest way would be to pull the names from a hat and so Jack, Spookley, Spice, Frankenstein and Darery Pumpkin were born. Bradley and Paul made a wooden sign for each and the children embraced the important role of keeping them alive by making sure they gave them all a drink each time they visited the kitchen garden with their parents.

Over the summer months the kids have been able to see the journey of a pumpkin from a baby plant, through to the end product of a lantern for Halloween and hopefully the whole process has also sowed a little seed within them to grow up into future gardeners.
